Stone Veneer Installation

Stone veneer transforms the appearance of a GTA home's exterior by covering plain concrete foundations, stucco walls, or siding with the look and texture of natural stone at a fraction of the weight and cost of full-thickness masonry. Manufactured stone veneer — engineered from Portland cement, lightweight aggregates, and iron oxide pigments cast in moulds taken from natural stone — weighs 75 percent less than natural stone and can be applied directly to prepared surfaces without the structural footings and shelf angles that full-thickness stone requires. This makes it suitable for retrofit applications on existing GTA homes where the foundation was never designed to carry the load of real stone. Natural thin-cut stone veneer is an alternative that offers genuine stone material — typically limestone, granite, or sandstone quarried in Ontario and Quebec — sliced to 3/4 to 1-1/4 inch thickness for installation as a veneer rather than a structural wall component. Natural stone carries a premium over manufactured product but provides the depth of colour variation, surface texture, and aging characteristics that manufactured stone cannot fully replicate. Both manufactured and natural stone veneer are installed over a substrate of metal lath and scratch coat on wood-framed walls, or directly adhered to clean masonry and concrete surfaces using polymer-modified thinset mortar. Ontario Building Code Section 9.20 governs masonry veneer installation, including requirements for corrosion-resistant ties anchoring the veneer to the structural wall, a minimum 1-inch air space behind adhered veneer on wood-frame walls, and flashing at the base of the veneer to direct any moisture that penetrates the veneer layer to the exterior through weep holes. GTA contractors installing stone veneer must account for the region's severe freeze-thaw exposure — veneer mortar joints and the bond between veneer and substrate are vulnerable to the same frost cycling that damages parging, and proper installation technique, drainage, and material selection are essential for long-term performance. Stone veneer installation across the GTA typically costs $5,000 to $15,000 depending on coverage area, whether manufactured or natural stone is used, substrate preparation required, and the complexity of the layout including corners, window returns, and sills.
