Small repairs on a few joints in an accessible area are reasonable for a handy homeowner. If you want to tackle a small section yourself, here is what the job actually involves. First, you need to grind out the old mortar to a minimum depth of 20mm using an angle grinder with a diamond tuckpointing blade or a manual mortar raking tool. This is the hardest part of the job — it is dusty, slow, and physically demanding. The grinder throws up a cloud of fine mortar and brick dust that requires proper respiratory protection (N95 minimum, P100 recommended), safety glasses, and hearing protection. You need steady hands to grind out mortar without cutting into the brick faces on either side of the joint, which requires control and experience. Cutting into the brick damages the protective fired face and accelerates deterioration. For a small patch of 10–20 square feet, manual mortar raking tools work but are extremely time-consuming.

Once the old mortar is removed, you dampen the joints (not soak — just mist with water so the brick doesn't suck moisture from the new mortar before it cures), then pack new mortar into the joints using a tuckpointing trowel and a hawk. The mortar must be pressed firmly into the full depth of the joint with no voids or air pockets. Joints are then tooled to a consistent profile — typically concave or V-shaped for GTA applications because these profiles shed water effectively. Tooling must happen at exactly the right time: when the mortar is "thumbprint firm" (you can press your thumb into it and leave a print without mortar sticking to your thumb). Tool too early and you smear the joint; tool too late and the mortar crumbles.

The critical decision is mortar type. If your home was built before 1940 — common in established Toronto neighbourhoods like Riverdale, the Danforth, Cabbagetown, and Parkdale — you likely have soft heritage brick that requires lime-based mortar (Type O or Type K). Using modern Portland cement mortar (Type S or Type N) on heritage brick will cause the brick faces to spall and crack, creating damage that is far more expensive than the tuckpointing itself. Identifying whether your brick is "soft" or "hard" and selecting the correct mortar type is where professional expertise is most valuable. Getting this wrong causes irreversible damage.

From a cost perspective, DIY materials for a small tuckpointing repair — mortar, bonding agent, trowels, grinder blade, dust mask — run $100–$300. Hiring a professional mason for foundation tuckpointing costs $8–$25 per square foot in the GTA, or roughly $2,000–$5,000 for a typical foundation. The honest recommendation: If you have a few crumbling joints on a post-war home with standard brick and you are comfortable with an angle grinder, a small DIY repair is reasonable. The cost of fixing a bad tuckpointing job — including removing Portland cement mortar from heritage brick — far exceeds the cost of doing it right the first time.
